Small Group Guide: Relying on God

Opening Prayer

Key Scripture: 1 Kings 18:36-39, 1 Kings 19:9-14

1. Introduction (5-10 minutes)

Briefly recap the story of Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal and his subsequent retreat to the cave.

2. Discussion Questions (30-40 minutes)

a. Elijah experienced a dramatic victory on Mount Carmel, yet he quickly fell into despair. Have you ever experienced a "spiritual high" followed by discouragement? Share your experience.

b. God revealed Himself to Elijah not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. How does this impact your understanding of how God communicates with us?

c. Elijah repeatedly told God, "I am the only one left." Why do you think he felt so alone despite his recent victory? Have you ever felt similarly isolated in your faith journey?

d. God reminded Elijah that there were 7,000 others who remained faithful. How can remembering we're part of a larger community of believers help us in times of discouragement?

e. The sermon mentioned that having something to do can help us rely on God. How has engaging in God-given tasks helped you grow in your faith or overcome difficult times?

3. Key Takeaways (10-15 minutes)

a. Even spiritual giants like Elijah can experience moments of doubt and fear.

b. God often works in subtle, quiet ways rather than always through dramatic displays.

c. We are never truly alone in our faith journey, even when we feel isolated.

d. God provides what we need (rest, nourishment, encouragement) before giving us new tasks.

e. Engaging in God-given tasks can help shift our focus from our problems to His purposes.

4. Practical Applications (10-15 minutes)

a. This week, set aside time to listen for God's "gentle whisper" through prayer and meditation.

b. Identify a fellow believer who might be feeling discouraged and reach out to them with encouragement.

c. If you're facing a challenging situation, ask God to reveal a specific task He wants you to focus on.

d. Reflect on past experiences where you felt alone but later realized God was present. Journal about these moments.

5. Closing Prayer

Encourage group members to pray for one another, especially those who might be feeling discouraged or alone in their faith journey.

Remember: The goal is to create a safe space for honest discussion and mutual encouragement as you explore the theme of relying on God.
